Video of Ned Arriving at the Sanctuary: Trepidation at First
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N4o1WURtOT8&feature=channel
from Carole and the Santuary, here's Ned's bio:

On Saturday, November 8, 2008 an emaciated Asian male elephant named Ned was confiscated from Florida based circus trainer Lance Ramos by the USDA for failure to comply with the Animal Welfare Act and was placed by USDA authority with The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee. On Sunday, November 9th, 2008 at about 12:30 p.m., Ned arrived at The Elephant Sanctuary. Ned will reside only temporarily in his private facility at The Sanctuary until a permanent facility is ready for him Last edited on Tue Jul 21st, 2009 07:51 pm by sydneyst

More On Lucy's Condition
excerpt: 2009-03-10 full article: http://www.elephants.com/newsStory.php?newsID=1147
Edmonton Journal - Canada
By Todd Babiak - The Edmonton Journal

Photograph 2007 by John Lucas, Edmonton Journal
Lucy the elephant has a tooth problem. It is only the latest in a long and lamentable list of her medical conditions between 1980 and today. While no one would ever dispute that Lucy's handlers at the Valley Zoo love her dearly, it is also clear that she has suffered monumentally since her arrival in Edmonton. Lucy lives alone in a compact enclosure with a cement floor. In very cold weather, the weather we are experiencing today, she cannot go outside at all.
For some years now, critics -- most recently, former Price is Right host Bob Barker -- have suggested that Lucy should be moved to a sanctuary in a warmer climate, where she could move about freely and interact with other elephants. The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee has agreed to take Lucy. Ed Stewart, the director of PAWS, the Performing Animal Welfare Society, a similar sanctuary in California, along with his veterinarian, had planned to come to Edmonton last weekend to take part in a $50 course called "Behind the Scenes with Lucy." The class was cancelled at the last minute, along with a similar event on March 21.

Mr. Barker was contacted to help by Julie Woodyer of Zoocheck Canada. Zoocheck and Edmonton's Voice for Animals. Mr. Barker said yesterday, he decided to take up Lucy's cause after Zoocheck sent him copies of her health records from 1980 to 2008, which were obtained through a Freedom of Information request.

About the Wonderful Zula and Her Best Friend Tange

Zula
Zula was orphaned at two years old when her family was killed in a culling. She was captured and sent to live in a zoo. She was a dominant individual but had only lived with one other elephant for nearly 30 years. She was regal in stature and held her head higher than Tange.
The edge of her right ear was tattered. Her ivory was longer than Tange and Flora's. Her face was thinner than Tange's and she was often seen in the company of Tange.
For almost 5 years, Zula flourished at The Elephant Sanctuary, enjoying the space and richness of her environment in the company of her best friend and ardent admirer, Tange.
Zula died suddenly on January 11, 2009. Deep sorrow is felt by caregivers and elephant family alike.
Sydney: Rest in Peace Beloved. Tange will miss you deeply and all of us have been enriched by you.

This is one of our favorite elephant organizations: http://www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/index.asp
and these are some of the orphan elephants you can sponsor (plus a rhino).

Great Work by The Elephant Sanctuary
The Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tennessee is one of the favorites of Fergie, Sydney and Friends. They are not an outdoor animal safari park but rather a refuge for elderly female elephants worn out by circuses and zoos. Everything at the sanctuary is about giving back an unmolested life to the elephants.
More from the sanctuary:
The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee, founded in 1995, is the nation's largest natural habitat refuge developed specifically for endangered African and Asian elephants. It operates on 2,700 acres in Hohenwald, Tennessee - 85 miles southwest of Nashville.
The Elephant Sanctuary exists for two reasons:
To provide a haven for old, sick or needy elephants in a setting of green pastures, old-growth forests, spring-fed ponds and a heated barn for cold winter nights.
To provide education about the crisis facing these social, sensitive, passionately intense, playful, complex, exceedingly intelligent and endangered creatures.
Please visit our website (ELEPHANTS.COM) for more information about our non-profit organization and the 18 elephants that currently call the Sanctuary home.
