Researchers Review Habitat Loss from 2008 Quake:
590 sq miles Lost in Minshan Mtns.

A new study using satellite imagery examines the impact of the 2008 Sichuan earthquake on the panda reserves in the region. The New York Times reports: In one of the hardest hit areas, the southern part of the Minshan Mountains, about one-quarter of the panda habitat, or 135 square miles, was destroyed by mudflows and landslides. The flows also had the effect of fragmenting much of the remaining habitat into smaller patches.
In a paper in Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment, Weihua Xu and colleagues at the Chinese Academy of Sciences detail the destruction in South Minshan, which is home to about 35 pandas and contains four reserves. They suggest that several new protected areas be created in the region, and that new corridors between fragmented areas be established “to ensure the long-term sustainability of the giant panda
population and habitat.”
Dr. Xu and his colleagues used satellite images from before the quake, supplemented by fieldwork, to identify areas of suitable panda habitat — forested, not-too-steep mountain land at elevations between 3,300 and 12,500 feet, with plenty of pandas’ staple food, bamboo. Then they compared post-quake satellite images to determine where mud- and landslides had obliterated the habitat. They found that habitat in the region was reduced from about 590 square miles to 455.

I have done some research about the pandas situation in China but not really fully covering all resources since I'm in Australia currently on an exchange student programme.
On May 12th, right after the warthquake attacked, the panda reserve centre where is close to the epicentre had completely lost contacts with the outside world as all communication devices were damaged. It was untill 30hours later were the connections relinked after 2 workers landed in Wolong by a helicopter carrying satellite phones.
The news came out immediately(mostly in Chinese): 86 pandas are all fairly good with no injuries nor death including "Tuan tuan" & "Yuan yuan" who are going to be given to Taiwan. But 5 workers died and 32 sturctures are all damaged. All pandas have been tranferred to a safer place where is pretty narrower with fences around. Thus, still 3 pandas are missing.
The other two panda reserve cnetres in Chengdu and Shaanxi are both affected but all 144 pandas are reported no injuries nor death. But, sadly, there is still no report of the situation of 1590 wild pandas.
I also found out news from Honkong reporting some pandas have got slight injuries and some youths are still in shock hiding on the trees.
The Wolong Reserve centre has recieved the first donation of 500,000 yuan(approx. 71,500 US dollars) on 16th of May and the next day all resuing resouces have been transported to Wolong. Since the road to Wolong has seriously damaged, the date of resources arrivial is still unknown. The State Forestry Administration has urged all panda reserve centres to repair structures, take great care of pandas and try to observe the circumstances of wild pandas.
According to news from fashion.ifeng.com, a principal of Chengdu panda reserve centre said the food and water apply for pandas are significantly important. They have no problems with "fresh bamboo" supply since they contacted with a nearby bamboo producer. For water, he said they have a spare generator which can generate electricity by themselves so that the fresh water problem can be soloved.
